Maker of Violins, Violas and Cellos

16 Inch Jenny Bailly Viola 1936

Jenny Bailly made this 16 inch viola in her atelier in Paris in 1936.  She was a rare woman in the profession at that time, taking over the shop of her father, Paul Bailly when he retired.  She made hundreds of instruments in the violin family and is highly regarded as a maker.  This instrument, modeled after Stradivari, is in excellent condition with beautiful brown varnish over a golden ground.  The two-piece spruce top shows hazel in the upper left bout, and is of medium-width straight grain that widens out at the periphery.  The two-piece maple back is highly flamed with chevrons tenting upwards.  The ribs and neck are of similar maple.  The tone is large, warm and robust with excellent projection and fast response.  Sale Price: $6,000 U.S. dollars.
